Two HOT Saga's - Twilight vs Harry Potter

There are two series/movie series that are HOT-HOT right now; Twilight and Harry Potter and I have to admit that I'm addicted to them both. I'm not entirely sure what drew me to the Twilight books. I skimmed through most of them because I was annoyed with Bella through most of the books. And then when we were suddenly in the first person POV of Jacob (whom I ADORE!), I was sooooooo pissed off, I put the book down and didn't pick it back up for a month. I'd invested so strongly into a character I barely liked (Bella) and then suddenly we're in the head of my favorite character while he's being a complete IDIOT! But I think what made that series HOT was the original movie. I remember Roomie telling me to read Twilight and I saw the cover with the apple and I was like, "Dude, I don't have a freakin' clue what this book is about. Why would I read yet another vampire book?" It wasn't until after I saw the movie that I became addicted and interested. What Ms. Meyers did was create such an interesting love triangle, that it became almost a web. As soon as you stepped into her world, you were tangled into it and you either read to the end or you were gobbled up by the spider. Kinda. Sorta. That's the only thing I can think. Harry Potter, on the other hand, has everything! I was addicted from page 1! And then when they came out with the movies, it was like cherries on my Sunday! I finally got to SEE the characters that I'd fallen in love with and I got to see them grow. The screening person...what do they call the person who chooses the actors? It's a screening something. Right? Anyway, whoever that person is was BLOODY BRILLIANT, as Ron would say. The plot line per book was interesting and there was ROOM in there to catch the everyday stuff. I think that's the part I loved most, and the thing I would love to be able to do more of in MY books. Have a space in there for Christmas, or going to the town (I forgot the name. I must re-read these books!). Or the little spats that had absolutely nothing to do with the plot, but everything to do about the character plot. Ms. Rowling had a very nice, natural balance between heart stopping structural plot and enduring character plot. Did the movie take Ms. Rowling and Harry from Not to Hot? I don't think so. That series was Hot before the movie, but the movies definitely made her book RED HOT! Also, I think the main difference between the two is that Twilight is for girls. Harry Potter is for everyone. Twilight needed the movie to get people to see the glitz and glamour of Ms. Meyer's world, whereas the movie just made Ms. Rowling's world more....MORE. In Twilight, the movies are better than the books, even though New Moon still was dry, mopey and more than a little boring. Not my favorite of the series. With Harry Potter, the books were better than the movies, but the movies brought the books home. There were other books that were brought to movie that didn't do nearly as well. *shrug* I hope that one day when I'm published *praying, crossing fingers, and cursing at the Gods of Luck* my books might make it to a movie. Will I do as well as either Ms. Meyers or Ms. Rowling? Probably not, but I can try.

  1. I'm with you, Frankie. My wife, her best friend, and my daughter went and saw Eclipse today. My wife and friend LOVE the books, and think the movies are so-so at best, but my daughter LOVED the movie.

And then we watched the latest trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (posted over at my blog (http://jayeckert.blogspot.com/2010/06/very-latest-harry-potter-trailer.html) in case you are interested).

Harry & Hermione visit Godric's Hollow Christmas Eve in Deathly Hallows - they're juiced up on polyjuice potion - and wandering the neighborhood. JK Rowling makes everything... EVERYTHING... a true "moment".
